Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week
November 1 - November 7
Bill 77 (Hawkins Gignac Act [Carbon Monoxide Safety], 2013), amended the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997, to allow the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services to require the use of CO alarms. The Ontario Fire Code, a regulation established under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997, has been amended to include requirements to lessen the risk created by the presence of unsafe levels of CO. Establishing an annual awareness week was part of Bill 77, which made CO alarms mandatory in all Ontario homes. This public education campaign, runs from November 1 to 7 and is led by fire services across the province. They will be hosting events to spread the message and raise awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide and the importance of installing detectors in residential dwellings.
