Syringomyelia & Chiari Malformation Month
September 1 - September 30
Syringomyelia is a disorder in which a cyst, referred to as a Syrinx or cavity forms inside the spinal cord. Over time, the Syrinx can grow and damage the nerves that run through the spinal cord and destroy the cord altogether.
Chiari Malformation are structural defects in the part of the brain that controls balance, the cerebellum. The resulting pressure on the cerebellum and brain stem often affects the functions controlled by these areas and restricts the flow of cerebrospinal fluid to and from the brain.
